Almost all the phones on the market are smartphones these days. There are so many make and models that that choosing the best phone can be quite confusing. In the sea of smartphones, that have quite similar features, it is important to choose the one with features that matter the most. It doesn’t matter what make or model of phone you buy as long as it has some essential features. Here are some of the essential features that you should pay close attention to while purchasing a smartphone.
The operating system is the heart of any smartphone. Google’s Android, Apple’s iOS and Microsoft’s Windows Phone are the most common operating systems. Although Android and iOS have the largest share of the smartphone market, there are some good windows phones on the market as well.
All the three operating systems, are quite sophisticated offering a great user experience. The choice between them comes down to two things- The ease of use and the number of apps available. As far as the ease of use is concerned, iOS is the easiest of them to use. The simple user interface has almost no learning curve at all. You can master everything in a matter of minutes.
Android, on the other hand, offers a lot of customization, but there is a significant learning curve. Although with the latest Android releases, Google has made the OS quite user-friendly. Still, regarding overall ease of use, it lags behind the iOS.
Windows offers a unique user experience that is quite different from both iOS and Android. The tile interface is easy to use and learn.
When it comes to the actual apps available, iOS and Android are the best. The Windows store lags behind quite a lot, and there are just not enough apps available. Android handles all the native Google Apps best. Whereas iOS has the largest collection of third party apps.
No matter how awesome the software is, it is useless without a great hardware. While there are many great phones out there, some are better than the others when it comes to hardware performance. As Apple manufacturers its phones that run on iOS, there is not a lot to choose from. If you like iOS, your options are limited. You will have to get an iPhone. Android has no such limitations, however. Android phones are manufactured by so many manufacturers that you have almost endless options. Some of the most common brands of Android phones include Samsung, Google, HTC, Motorolla, and LG. Apart from these big players, there are hundreds of other companies as well that manufacture Android handsets. With so many options, there is an Android phone for every budget, style, and preference. Windows again have very limited options that you can choose from. Microsoft Lumia is the top of the line windows phone brand with some other options from HTC and smaller companies.
Although the screen is a part of the hardware, it is such an important part that it deserves a separate mention. Almost all the phones these days have high-resolution screens onboard. There are various sizes to choose from as well. Most of the phones have bigger screen sizes to take full advantage of the operating system and offer a better user interface. One of the most important aspects of a display that you should pay close attention to is the resolution. As a rule of thumb, never buy a phone with a screen that has a resolution of less than 1280 by 720. Another important thing to note is the display technology. The two most common screen technologies include LCD and AMOLED. While the LCD screens have higher brightness compared to the AMOLED screens, they consume more power.
Another important thing to consider while purchasing a smartphone is the battery capacity. All that fancy software and the giant screen will be useless if you run out of battery every so often. The larger screens consume more power and hence require a bigger battery. Although most phones have better batteries these days, it makes a lot of sense to pick the one that will last at least a day.
One of the most common uses of a smartphone apart from making phone calls is to take pictures. With some of the phones having quite powerful cameras, there is no need to buy a separate camera. Again it can be confusing to choose the right camera for a phone. People usually make a common mistake of paying too much attention to the megapixel value of the camera. A higher megapixel value does not make it a better camera. Read online reviews and see some pictures yourselves to make that decision.
Memory and Storage
Although all smartphone operating systems these days are quite sophisticated, they require a lot of memory to run as well. If you have a phone with less than a GB of RAM, the chances are that it will have less than satisfactory user experience. Most of the high-end phones have about 2-3 GB of RAM with a Quadcore processor that gives a snappier performance. Even if you are on a budget, I would not recommend going below 1 GB RAM for any operating system. Again, how snappy your device depends on what you expect from it.
As far as the internal storage is concerned, make sure that you have the option to expand the storage capacity. Although most of the android and windows phones have an additional micro SD card slots, iPhones don’t. The minimum internal memory that I would recommend is 16GB. There are some phones on the market with 8GB memory as well, but it is better to have more memory than to struggle for it when you need it the most.
The choice of a smartphone is quite personal. Many people like the ease and fluidity of iOS while others prefer the wider customizability offered by Android. Some people like to have smaller phones while others like their phones close o a tablet size. No matter what is your preference, make sure you pay attention to the features that we just discussed. Do a lot of research before you settle for a phone. Everybody has a smartphone these days if you can, try to have a hands on experience with someone else’s phone. That way you will know how the phone feels in your hand and how comfortable you are carrying it around. We hope that this article would make our decision a tad easier. Good luck finding the best smartphone!
